Broccoli & Lung Cancer

Can Broccoli help with my lungs?

The “BBC News Website” had an article regarding a study showing a benefit of a substance found in Broccoli and its protective effect for the lungs! They reported that US scientists found “sulforaphane increases the activity of the NRF2 gene in human lung cells which protects the cells from damage caused by toxins. The same broccoli compound was recently found to be protective against damage to blood vessels caused by diabetes.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often caused by smoking and kills about 30,000 UK residents a year.

In the latest study, a team from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found “significantly lower activity of the NRF2 gene in smokers with advanced COPD.”

Research suggests that sulforaphane may limit the damage which leads to serious lung disease.

There is a broccoli extract in capsule form that contains 60 mg of the compound sulforaphane along with 600 mg of Broccoli seed extract.
