Ask Harvey

Hi, I just bought and read the book and starting on day 1 of the new guidelines outlined in “Fit for Life”. I had a question about vegetables because the book mentions not cooking them over 130 degrees, but what about tomato sauce? Also, I eat a lot of spaghetti squash and I cook it in the oven on 375 for about 35 minutes… am I depleting all of the nutritional value this way? Should I be cooking it for longer on 130?

Thanks!
AK

Hi AK,

Actually, the passage you are referring to is a quote by Dr. N.W. Walker who was making the point that the life element in food, enzymes, are destroyed at 130° (as it turns out it actually occurs at 118°).  Be that as it may, unless you are a total “raw-fooder” you are going to be eating some cooked food and that means foods that have had their enzymes destroyed—that’s just how it is.  What is most important, and what I stress most emphatically in all of my more recent books, is that for optimum health, one should endeavor to eat more living (uncooked) food than dead (cooked) food. So, yes, you can have tomato sauce and cooked spaghetti squash, and whatever other foods you are partial to, but just remember that the more living food you eat the better.

You also might want to consider taking digestive enzymes whenever having cooked food to further assist your body. Personally I never, under any circumstances, eat anything cooked without them.  The difference in the way I feel and the positive impact they have on my health is significant.  If you are interested, here are the ones I take:http://tinyurl.com/8965cl7

Harvey,

I have suffered with Colitis for 10 years now and currently am in the midst of a flare up that just won’t go away. I have read many books on diet in regards to colitis and the more research I do the more confused I get. The bulk of the books on the subject of colitis are about avoiding carbs, wheat and gluten. There are also others that suggest all raw food and one that suggest that I never again eat anything but fruit. I love fruit but don’t think I could eat that and only that for life. I have also read fit for life and another one of your books that talks about mono dieting (the title escapes me at the moment). I feel your eating style to make the most sense and I am going to give it an honest try to cure myself of this colitis. I know diet is the answer even though my doctors have told me “diet has nothing to do with it, take these drugs and eat whatever you want”. I really need to know if I should be avoiding carbs or not, when I say carbs I mean wheat, bread, brown rice. I really am confused and would like your opinion on carbs. Also I eat meat currently and would most likely continue to do so but combine it correctly with veggies. If you have any other books or products to recommend please do so as well. Really looking forward to your response.
thanks,
AT

Hi AT,

Well, the first thing you must do is never again allow yourself to be in the presence of the addle-brained ignoramus who told you ”diet has nothing to do with it, take these drugs and eat whatever you want”.  That would be exactly like saying that water in the lungs had nothing to do with someone drowning in a swimming pool. Most all pain, irritation, and inflammation associated with the lower intestines, be it Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s, or any other discomfort of the bowels are relatively straightforward to overcome by proper diet.  The fact is the living body is ALWAYS striving to cleanse itself of the factors that bring on such problems in the first place.  Always! It is something the body does for its own survival 24 hours a day.  And it is your obligation to get out of the body’s way and not impede its efforts. One of the primary results of following the FIT FOR LIFE principles of diet is to regularly assist the body in its detoxification efforts. Over the years I have been contacted by literally thousands of people who told me that following the principles of eating laid out in the FIT FOR LIFE books ended their colitis and other problems associated with the digestive tract and colon.  My suggestion to you is to re-read FIT FOR LIFE: A New Beginning as soon as you possibly can.  As you read the book pay special attention to the sections on The Lymph System and Periodic Mono-Dieting as they are the path to cleansing and strengthening the body and healing the colitis.

Your question about carbs, specifically starches (pasta, bread, rice, and other cooked starches made from grains) is appropriate in that it would be best to minimize those foods while you are striving to heal the colitis.  The human species is not biologically adapted to eat grains; any grains, even those not containing gluten.  Most people can eat them of course with no noticeable difficulty (or they are not attributing their health concerns to eating grains), but there are those, obviously, who cannot.

Dr. Norman W. Walker was one of the most knowledgeable health practitioners I have ever known.  He lived an extremely healthy life and passed healthfully in his sleep at the age of 100.  He was convinced beyond any possible doubt that the most deleterious food we could eat, that would cause more problems than we could imagine, was starch – grains!  He railed against them in his books and lectures his entire career.  Why?  Because everything eaten has to ultimately be liquefied so the nutrients we need that are in the food can be passed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream for delivery to the cells.

The problem is that starch is NOT WATER SOLUBLE!  It can’t be dissolved and liquefied so it remains a solid and therefore cannot be utilized by the body. The undissolved starch molecules remain in the body and gum up the works as it were, clogging and interfering with blood flow, lymph flow, optimum function of organs, and efficient elimination.  Believe me, that spells trouble. For thousands and thousands of years before the advent of agriculture humans ate no grains whatsoever.  What did they eat?  Fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries, tubers, and animal flesh.  There wasn’t anything else.

This is not to suggest that you never eat starch foods, only that you cut back, and when you do eat them they should be properly combined, meaning that they should be eaten with a salad and vegetables, not proteins. Obviously the more refined and processed the grains the worse they are.  Even protein foods at this time should be minimized as well and eaten properly combined as you are already doing.

If you really want to give yourself a leg up, whenever NOT Mono-dieting, it would be extremely wise for you to also consume digestive enzymes whenever eating starches (or protein), properly combined or not. Personally I never, under any circumstances, eat anything cooked without them.  The difference in the way I feel is significant and will help you immeasurably.  If you are interested, here are the ones I take: http://tinyurl.com/8965cl7

I just picked up your book 4 days ago. I started on a new lifestyle plan 30 days back and I am so excited to read and understand what you have said in your book FIT FOR LIFE.

I am a single mom of a 4 year old boy, and I have let myself slide. In the last 30 days I lost 5.6kg, but I feel so motivated now that i have read your book. I know that this will be a change for the better.

Thank you for all you have done. I am so excited, as I start this journey of weightloss and wellbeing. I had hoped to reach my goal weight of 65kg by June, but I bet with the FFL programme it will be way sooner!!

Thank you!

Hi CF,

Thanks for taking the time to write and share your enthusiasm.  It’s nice to know my books are appreciated and they are helping people just like you.  I wish you success.

Mono Dieting

Diseases like Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia are all very hard to live with. These conditions cause discouragement and can lessen the quality of one’s life. Things like anxiety and other “thorns in the flesh” seem to just linger in our lives, and every chronic condition seems to be shrouded in mystery as to its cause. Living Without Pain is an amazing book with a new and non-defeatist take on the concepts of chronic illness. It explains Harvey Diamond’s viewpoint, that these ailments result from a buildup of toxins in the body which lasts for years. This taxes the Lymphatic system to the point that it becomes unable to deal properly with these toxins and we then experience these chronic conditions, like pain. Fit For Life can help one employ strategies to fix the so called un-fixable. One of these strategies, the one this article focuses on, is Mono-Dieting. For the Fit For Life method to work, and a person be cleansed of their chronic illness, two things need to take place. “First, the toxins that are the underlying cause of these ailments and which have overwhelmed the lymph system, causing them to settle in the connective tissue, must be drawn out, broken down, and removed from the body. Second, a manner of eating needs to be adopted that does not overwhelm the lymph system by producing more toxins than it has the ability and energy to eliminate.” This is a simple process, but it may be a difficult one. Removing those residual toxins is an important step, and Mono-dieting can really help with this. What is Mono-Dieting though, and how does it help?
Mono-dieting is a method of eating that supports the detoxification of poisons in the connective tissue and increases the energy the body has for healing and other important functions. It simply means eating exclusively raw food for a period of time, from days to several months at a time. When we eat cooked and heavy foods, of processed or artificial foods, it takes a lot of energy to digest them. This energy could otherwise be used to help cleanse the body. At the same time, these foods cause a buildup of toxins in the body. Eating raw food counters this. Mono-dieting frees up huge amounts of energy because of smooth and easy digestion. This energy can now be used for cleansing and healing. This factor of energy “prioritizing” should be enough to motivate you to at least try Mono-dieting. With all that energy free for your therapeutic use and the support to the lymph system, the results of Mono-dieting never fail to benefit the healing process. Most of us have never  Mono-dieted for even one day. We encourage you to try it. We wish you good health, and remember that Harvey Diamond loves you.

Your Question: What can I do about vertigo? Two mornings ago, I woke up and
when I turned to my side suddenly saw the room spinning around me. After a
few seconds it was gone. The next day while bending to the floor to look
for a pair of shoes under the sofa, another episode of vertigo hit me. I sat
down, closed my eyes, and in a moment it was gone.

I went to a physician who took my blood pressure. I t was normal. She then
prescribed an anti-vertigo medication.

But what brought the vertigo? I have a neck problem and am supposed to
exercise it regularly. I haven’t done so in a while. Could the vertigo
come from what one physician diagnosed as an “arthritis of the neck? ” Do I
just then have to resume exercises? Will Renewzyme help? -RS

Dr. Monhollon is a board certified Family PhysicianDear RS,

You describe benign positional vertigo (BPV).  It is the result of a disturbance somewhere within the equilibratory system.  It is usually caused by a viral infection of the labyrinth in the inner ear.  It could also be caused by an allergy.  BPV is not a dangerous condition, but obviously it is annoying until it goes away, which it will almost certainly do on its own, given time.  If the symptoms persist or are particularly severe, you should see a doctor for a through examination of the ears, eyes, and nervous system to rule out rare but more serious causes of vertigo.

Start with your diet.  Eating habits that strengthen your immune system should help you recover from BPV.  Drink a glass of water with a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar in it several times per day until you are well.  Then consider doing it once per day to help you stay well.  Avoid caffeine, chocolate, salt, fried foods, nicotine, alcohol and aspartame.

Find out if you are gluten sensitive.  You may just want to do a trial of strict gluten avoidance for at least one week and see if your symptoms improve.

LifeMax B is a VP nutrition product that will help BPV.  Also take vitamin C, ginkgo biloba, and ginger.

I do not think that the arthritis in your neck is related to vertigo.  However, you should treat your neck condition with exercise, massage  other bodywork, and sugar free diet.  RenewZyme is likely to help your neck.  RenewZyme also improves immunity for many of the same reasons that Life-Immune does.  You may want to read the product information for Life-Immune and RenewZyme on the VP nutrition website.
